These lessons are catered to the novice who wants a bit of one-on-one help. You will get undivided attention and focus on whatever you would like (electronics, gear, technique). Book the shack with up to 4 friends and get your own instructor. The emphasis is on learning - catching is a bonus!

All equipment and bait provided. Bring your own food or request a warm lunch.

Introduction to Ice Fishing - Level I

Women includes all persons who identify as female.

All equipment, bait and tackle included.

Lessons will take place in a heated tent on the ice.

All fish caught will be released.

In this introductory course, you will learn the skill set required to fish with confidence when out with others. You will learn to use gear, tie knots, handle bait & tackle confidently and use a hand auger. You will learn to remove a fish from the hook and release it safely back into the lake. These techniques will increase your chances of success on the ice and impress your fellow anglers!

This course is designed to help you get set for a day of fishing without the support of others. You will learn to select a spot, set up a tent, power auger holes, choose appropriate gear, tie additional knots, and use an ice flasher.  After this day, you will be set for success on your first solo adventure.

Duration: 6hrs   9:00am–3:00pm

Want to test your skills on Lake Winnipeg (aka Big Windy)? A nicely appointed heated fishing shack is located near the town of Gimli. Lessons will include how to safely drive onto the ice using your own vehicle or walk to the shack if you’d prefer. You will learn to identify a variety of fish, use electronics, try a variety of jigging techniques, auger holes out on the Lake and set-up tip ups or tip-downs, and fillet fish (should we catch some).

Much of the lesson will take place in the comfort of a heated shack. 

 

All Equipment is provided – bring your own if you’d like. Participants can keep or release their catches.

IMPORTANT: A fishing License is required for all participants ages 16+ prior to the start of any lesson. Licenses can be purchased online here: https://www.manitobaelicensing.ca/licensing.page

This is for novices and those wanting to gain some extra confidence. You don’t need to be an expert or know everything to go out and have fun. You just need to learn enough to get out there!

  • Using your own transportation, you may drive onto the ice (4x4 or AWD + snow tires recommended) Ice driving safety protocols will be shared prior to embarking onto the lake. There is ample parking if you prefer the 10 minute/350m walk to the shack.

  • The lovely heated shack includes everything for your day of ice fishing. Two additional stations will be set up to ensure social distancing and safety protocols are followed (a heated tent and a campfire outdoors). Participants will rotate through the stations throughout the day.

Lessons will include:

    • Operating an auger

    • Selecting tackle, knots, baiting the hook, rod and line choice and more.

    • Fish Identification and fish handling

    • Electronics, bottom structure and basic fish location techniques

    • Other information as requested (setting up a tent, fire starting, etc).

  • Snacks, warm beverages and a HOT LUNCH are provided.

NOTE: On this day, all fish are catch and release except for Walleye. Fish will be filleted for the participants. Participants can keep fish up to their legal limit (dependent on their license – full/conservation).
